What is a citrus fruit

Citrus fruits are SOME of the MOST DELICIOUS and DELIGHTFUL TREATS. Even Simon Cowell would be unable to deny their greatness! Hahaha.

Citrus fruits belong to the genus Citrus, part of the citrus family Rutaceae. Although the Rutaceae family is not Italian, I call it the “Cosa nostra” of juicy fruits.

You can find citrus fruits in MANY FORMS; they come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and flavors! Talk about having options! You are not allowed to simp for just one!

These delectable treats have an acidic flavor due to their HIGH ACID CONTENT – for added zing! Think of it like adding tiny flavor jolts of lightning to your taste buds!

Plus, you DON’T NEED a tree to enjoy them; they’re available all year round at your local grocery store. They are just like that special someone who never leaves your side.

No matter how you like your citrus fruit – sweet or sour – they all pack a tangy punch thanks to their ACIDIC TASTE. So why not add some zest and spice up your day with one (or two) of these juicy delights? Hey, it’s better than having another cup of coffee.

So now you want to grab a citrus fruit to snack on. Here are your TOP options:

1. Oranges

Oranges are the most POPULAR CITRUS FRUIT. They are the Kim Kardashian of the citrus family.

Oranges have a sweet and sometimes acidic flavor, with lots of delish juice. Think of it like they’re giving you a giant flavor tickle from the inside out!

2. Lemons

Lemons are probably the MOST ACIDIC of all citrus fruits. They are known for their tart flavor and excellent use in COOKING or DRINKS like Lemonade. They are almost always sour, like that aunt who never has anything nice to say.

3. Limes

Limes are sour fruits that come from EVERGREEN TREES. They have an intense but refreshing taste that everyone enjoys! I am everyone!

Some people say that lines have an ACQUIRED FLAVOR, like fine wine or cheese. You can’t appreciate the full experience until you’ve really let it sink in.

4. Grapefruits

Grapefruits the LARGER SIZE of this citrus fruit makes it a POPULAR PICK! They have lots of juice and a slightly tangy flavor. This makes grapefruits perfect for zesty drinks like Margaritas. Hold your horses! Don’t make one just yet; wait till it’s 5 pm!

5. Tangerines/Mandarins

Like oranges, tangerines have an ACIDIC TASTE and OIL GLANDS in the spongy white fleshy rind. Unlike oranges, these babies are sweeter and easier to peel – which makes them a great snack for lazy people! Hahaha.

Let’s explore what makes strawberries so special:

1. Seeds

Strawberry plants PRODUCE SEEDS outside their fleshy layers for reproduction. That’s just like most people out there trying TO SPREAD their FAMILY NAME everywhere. We don’t recommend it, though; remember, strawberries don’t pay child support! Hahaha.

2. Antioxidants

Strawberries contain high vitamin C, malic acid, and ellagic acid levels. This makes them a great source of ANTIOXIDANTS. Do you remember what grandmothers used to say? ‘A strawberry a day keeps the wrinkles away.”

3. Energy Boosting Nutrients

Strawberries have ENERGY-BOOSTING NUTRIENTS like iron and vitamin B6. These offer health benefits such as REDUCING INFLAMMATION. Think of these components like engine oil for your body. They keep everything running smoothly! Vroom Vroom!

4. Sugar

They have LOW SUGAR content than other fruits yet still provide a great source of dietary fiber. They’re almost like nature’s candy, except you don’t have to worry about cavities or a sugar crash.

5. Anthocyanin

The BRIGHT RED COLOR comes from ANTHOCYANIN. This pigment is so potent it’s been known to turn even the most laid-back person into an agitator. All you have to do is spill it on their shirt. You’ll have a long day. Hahaha. The same pigment is found in blueberries and cranberries

Did you know strawberries are NOT PART of the citrus family? Although they share a sweet flavor profile, they belong to the Rosaceae family

They belong to the genus Fragaria, and they have attractive white flowers. When someone eats one, it’s said that all their wishes come true! Just kidding. Hahaha.

Most people think strawberry is citrus fruit. It’s like how people judge a book by its cover, but in this case, it’s more like judging a fruit by its bloom!

Strawberries also have an AGGREGATE FRUIT STRUCTURE, like raspberries and blackberries. These are the kind of fruits your mother told you about!! She definitely told you to eat them!

There is also a difference in the CITRIC ACID CONTENT of the fruits. In citrus fruits it is much higher than in non-citrus fruits like strawberries.

Still, some people say you should mix some lemon juice into your strawberry smoothie. The result will be quite delicious.

Do you know someone who likes to ask if strawberries are part of this delicious group we all love? You can confidently say no because although delicious, strawberries ARE NOT CITRUS.

If lemons were a group of popular teens, strawberries would be the nerdy kids in their school. They are sweet but not quite cool enough to fit in with the rest of the fruity gang. [**Remembers my school days**]

Eating citrus fruit can have health benefits. Examples include reducing the risk of CHRONIC DISEASES like heart disease and stroke. If only it could help with student loans, it would be the perfect fruit! Hahaha

4. Antioxidants

Most citrus fruits have thick rinds full of ANTIOXIDANTS! It’s like nature wrapped up all its goodness into one tasty package. Heck, it may even make you immortal! Just kidding, don’t overeat any citrus fruit.

Cons:

1. Acidity

Citrus fruits can have quite A LOT of citric acid. So those with sensitive digestive systems may find it difficult to eat them raw. Your stomach might do a “citrusy” flip-flop when you eat them raw!

2. Sugar Content

Sugar content is HIGHER THAN OTHER TYPES of fruit due to their natural sweetness. If you have DIABETES, be careful not to indulge too much in them! They might be that fruit your doc warned you about.

3. Seeds

Some citrus fruits have SEEDS inside that you must avoid if eaten raw before eating the rest of the flesh in one go. You might CHOKE on a sour surprise if you don’t play that game of “Pick-a-Seed” well when eating your fruits.

4. Difficult Absorption

Vitamins in these fruits may not be absorbed as easily as others. They have more citric acid than most other fruits. So while they are healthy, they make you work a little harder to get the nutritional benefit. It’s like a citrusy obstacle course for your body!
